The lion tamer has three tools to control the prowling beasts: a whip, a stool, and a handful of tasty snacks. But which of these tools is most valuable? You might think it’s the whip, but it’s not. It’s the stool. When the lion tamer lifts the stool to face his snarling companions, the lions see all four stool legs and don’t know which one to focus on. As a result, they stand frozen, enabling the tamer to keep them at bay.
I want to suggest that Christ Himself should be our chief and number one focus.
Colossians 1:15-20
“Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,[e]
16 for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
17 He existed before anything else,
and he holds all creation together.
18 Christ is also the head of the church,
which is his body.
He is the beginning,
supreme over all who rise from the dead.[f]
So he is first in everything.
19 For God in all his fullness
was pleased to live in Christ,
20 and through him God reconciled
everything to himself.
He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth
by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.”
He is the Number One Cause from which all other causes grow. What’s your cause? If it is anything other than Him you will be distracted and defeated. The world in Jesus day was cause driven… justice and freedom from Roman rule was the cause. Keeping the purity of the Jewish religion was a cause… But Jesus wasn’t distracted by these worthy causes.. His ONLY cause was pleasing the Father. He said that He only did and said what He saw the Father saying and doing. For this reason He was misunderstood and deserted, because He wasn’t driven by their cause, but by His hidden kingdom of the heart.
He is our peace. The mind who is fixed on Him will be kept in perfect peace. As Peter looked to Jesus he walked on water… but when he looked to the storm he began to sink.
If all creation is held together in Him, then our own lives are as well… when things feel like they are crumbling and spinning out of control know that it is all held together in Him. Jesus life gave out.. He was misrepresented, deserted, betrayed, tortured, beaten and he did really die. This wasn’t a nightmare, or a ghastly mirage – it happened. He died. But He knew that His Redeemer lives!
Conclusion
Today is your life centered on Him or a cause?
Is your life at peace or overcome by the storm?
Has love run dry, or are you drinking from His love that never runs dry?
Has something in your life died and you are overcome with loss and grief?
Today, I want to encourage you to let go of all other causes and loves and make Him your chief and first focus and love… let all other causes spring from this place. And remember John 16:33
“I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.”
If you would like to take the first step in a journey with Jesus as your Chief cause and Chief love we’d love to pray with you. If you have lost your first love and focus of Christ, we’d love to pray with you. Feel free to come forward for prayer or chat with us after the service.
Let’s pray….
